VMS (Virtual Memory System) is an operating system originally made by Digital Equipment Corp (R.I.P.), which was sold to Compaq, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard.
Richard Levitte is very knowledged when it comes to OpenVMS, and Levitte Programming has for a long time been a VMS-only shop. Among the specialties is porting Unix programs to Unix.
VMS, and especially the newsgroup comp.os.vms, has had notable followers, some of the becoming "Net Legends" over time. One that is often mentioned is Carl J. Lydick, who unfortunatelly passed away in June 1996.
